The difference between conferences and unconferences is often described as follows: at conferences, speakers stand on stage, read through their slides, and there’s rarely time left for questions. At unconferences, everyone sits in a circle and discusses a topic—more or less in a structured way. In practice, however, there is a wide range of session formats that have proven successful at BarCamps:
Session Types
- Impulse Session: an impulse is given at the beginning with or without slides/screen sharing, followed by a discussion.
- AMA Session: in an Ask Me Anything session, participants can ask any questions to a person with expertise in a specific field.
- Brainstorming Session: ideas are collectively gathered on a question or topic using the Brainstorming method.
- Demo Session: a product, software, method, or workflow is presented in the session. Care should be taken to allow time for questions and interaction, and to ensure it doesn’t become a “promotional session”.
- FuckUp Session: stories of failure (so-called fuckups) on a topic are presented to transfer experiential knowledge.
- Exchange Session: experiences and lessons learned are shared among the participants on a topic (also known as Birds of a Feather (BoF) Session).
