On September 13, 2023, the Study Deans’ Conference was dedicated to the topic “AI in Higher Education”. The event focused on presenting the results of the qualitative and quantitative AI survey conducted (at that time exclusively) at Goethe University. In the context of the survey, students were asked to associate their use of AI tools with specific phases in the writing process, estimate the frequency and extent of usage, and indicate what support formats they desire from the university. Subsequently, the study deans reflected on how these results aligned with their own experiences regarding the use of generative AI in teaching as practiced so far and with their wishes for the future. Both the student survey and the exchange at the Study Deans’ Conference revealed that a productive integration of AI into teaching is desired and developments in this area cannot be ignored. However, learning to work with AI should always occur only in the form of additional offerings and should not become the actual task of a course of study.
