Kickoff Event: Generative AI for Students

On May 24, 2024, the kickoff event on Generative AI for Students took place. This event, organized by the AG-GKI (Working Group on Generative AI), offered an excellent opportunity to engage intensively with the world of artificial intelligence (AI) and learn about the latest developments at Goethe University.

Introduction of the Working Group and TechAcademy

At the beginning of the event, the Working Group and TechAcademy were introduced. The Working Group consists of a group of students and staff from various departments who meet regularly to exchange knowledge and work together on innovative projects. TechAcademy, on the other hand, offers a variety of courses, workshops, and training sessions to impart technical skills and knowledge in a practical manner. Both initiatives aim to provide students and teachers with a platform for further education in the field of AI.

Keynote by Dr. Friedrich Wolf

A special highlight of the event was the keynote speech by Dr. Friedrich Wolf. In his inspiring presentation, Dr. Wolf provided insights into the history and functionality of artificial intelligence. He explained how AI technology has evolved over the years and what milestones have been reached on the path to today’s Generative AI. His explanations about the functioning of generative models and their potential applications were particularly fascinating.

Through an interactive poll, participants were able to share their assessment of AI and indicate who among them already uses AI technologies. This survey revealed a wide spectrum of opinions and experiences, providing a good basis for further discussions.

Introduction of the Barcamp

Following this, the Barcamp format was introduced. Participants had the opportunity to gather their ideas for individual sessions and discuss problems and open questions with all involved. This exchange was extremely productive and showed how many different aspects of Generative AI interest the students and what challenges they see. The collected ideas and questions will be incorporated into the planning of the upcoming Barcamp in October.

Outlook

We are looking forward to the Barcamp in October and are excited about further developments. If you are also interested in this fascinating topic, sign up for our newsletter and mark October 11 in your calendar!
